A district of ponds.

Where makhana research is based.
ICAR’s Research Centre for Makhana, the crop’s dedicated government research station, is in Darbhanga. Its work runs from cultivation to value-added products such as makhana powder.
Swarna Vaidehi, the first makhana variety released in India, came out of ICAR-RCER in 2013 and is grown by farmers in Darbhanga, among other districts.

Is Darbhanga makhana different from makhana grown elsewhere in Bihar?
It is the same crop. What differs is the system: Darbhanga grows mostly in ponds, while Purnia and Katihar have moved much of their crop to fields. Grade is set by kernel size, not by district, and every lot is measured.
Which grades can you supply from Darbhanga?
Four grades, from 12–15 mm (4 suta) to over 21 mm (7 suta), each lot a single grade. Availability for your dispatch month is confirmed with the quote.
Do you dispatch from Darbhanga to other states?
Yes. Lots are dispatched from Bihar to your delivery point. Popped makhana is bulky, so freight is quoted per order on volume.
